Growing up in Illinois, I played many sports including soccer, tee ball, baseball, football, gymnastics, and wrestling. Wrestling was the sport that garnered most of my attention from 6th grade to senior year of high school. I was Varsity Captain my junior and senior years and wrestled for Team Illinois at nationals. It was the one constant in my life that helped me learn self-discipline, respect, hard work, friendship, and sportsmanship. My dad always said, "there is always someone out there training, they’re going to catch you. Better move and work harder". And that is the mentality I try to keep to this day.
In late 2010 I moved to a small beach town in California called Carpinteria. This is where I found CrossFit. After only a few months I was helping the local CrossFit box owner coach on-ramp classes and I was meeting a ton of new people. After a year I earned my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate, then I decided to educate myself further and get my Coaches Prep Certification (level 2 Trainer), as well as CrossFit power lifting certification. But the game changer for me was when I discovered that other boxes were hosting local competitions. This made CrossFit even more fun because it brought the old wrestling days of having that competitive side of me fire back up, and it gave me something to train for. I was hooked!
Through my coaching I started seeing and realizing, as I coached more members, CrossFit was changing other people’s lives, not just mine. They were looking at fitness in a totally different way. Members actually enjoyed walking through the door to workout. It was bringing people together in their community that they had never met. People were becoming stronger/fitter at all ages, more confident in themselves, and just being better prepared for everyday life obstacles. It then hit me; this is what I wanted to pursue and be a part of. Which is why today I am a co-owner of CrossFit Windansea.
